watching the super bowl halftime (the only part of the super bowl i watched), i, along with a 100 million people saw justin timberlake tear off janet jackson's costume to reveal a silver pastie at the end of their song and dance routine. thanks to tivo, we were able to rewatch the scene in delightful horror several times over. believing it was a sad attempt at recreating a madonna/britney moment and wanting to discuss the event further, i learned from wayne that it was not a pastie as originally suspected but silver nipple jewelry!

what mtv is saying:

HOUSTON, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The tearing of Janet Jackson's costume was unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional and was inconsistent with assurances we had about the content of the performance. MTV regrets this incident occurred and we apologize to anyone who was offended by it.

who cares if she showed nipple? who doesn't love boobies? and unplanned, unrehearsed and unintentional? nah, that was rehearsed. justin didn't grab for nothing. that was so planned if not pre-approved by mtv.

and let's not forget that justin and janet used to date. so if this is jewelry she normally rocks (go girl) than justin, i think would be aware of it. why shouldn't justin and janet rock and shock? we've had to witness britney's recently failed attempts. remember laughing at her mtv madonna lip lock and how we all cried out, "no more!" when she made headlines for her less than permanent white trash wedding? apparently, what justin has done (with or without janet's knowing) has truly shocked america. so...unless britney (or madonna) is sucking donkey dick during her next stage performance, i won't be moved.

shock america: justin 1, britney 0.

thanks to anil and alaina for inviting us over to celebrate the night with food, drinks, mario kart: double dash, tv and best of all, good company.

yeah, it's a little crazy. and yeah, we're still talking about it.

I was glad to see it. The "unplanned" (by whom?) breast exposure reminded me that unpredicted, "inappropriate" things can happen on television, even giant budget spectacle mainstream mass market television. Too much scripting and safety makes for boring media. Entertainers exposing themselves during otherwise orchestrated events? That's entertainment. The important element of chaos included.

Posted by: justin | February 2, 2004 12:34 AM

I think what was shocking about it was how boring her/their performance was up to that moment. It was almost hard to believe that they were supposed to have slept together in the past. Also the fact that he is dressed like he just woke up and she looks like a cyber samurai.

Nelly and Diddy were emasculated by appearing in the middle of the show, their schtick ends up being the most empty pop of the night. No sexiness at all. Nelly doesn't get any girl to derobe while singing "It's getting hot in here." Diddy ends up with some unironic cheerleaders, looking like he needs better lip sync mouth posture. They don't get to rip clothes off each other, let alone a white girl.

It compares to Tina Turner and Mick Jagger at Live Aid (Jagger ripped off her skirt). There was a darker tone with some of the superbowl ads this year (the crazy woman yelling at the man in the Bud ad and the crazy woman yelling about her husband's Toyota truck). And there is something dark that a performer as successful as Janet needs to be mock-attacked by a skinny white boy to try to inject some interest in her career.

What's on the horizon? A female singer getting beaten during live performance? (Madonna did that James Bond torture video already.) But we can't imagine Janet pulling down Justin's pants and showing his virginal buttocks.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I was personally shocked and appalled by this nipple incident, and I think that people who appear in the public eye should make more of an effort to keep their clothes on, and not gesticulate and gyrate as much as they do.

I am angry that Ms. Jackson and her cohort exposed my family and I (my faithful wife of eleven years, and our four daughters) to such obscenity and vulgarity. Next minute, they will have us mating in the street, indiscriminately, like cannibals from the Isle of the Savages.

I for one seek a higher and more spiritual existence than that that exists in the demonic and sexually explicit gutter that Ms. Jackson and her ex-lover conspired to drag us in to.

No Ms. Jackson! We will NOT be brain washed to behave like monkeys in the zoo, doing all kinds of disgraceful and vulgar acts.

Yours sincerely

NASTY! Nasty boys!

Yes this is great, more of janet jackson's boobs please. Her music went stale after her 3rd album with that nice house tune "throb" on it but at least her boobs are still entertaining.

People are dying in other countries and we are so upset and/or obsessed over a breast on television. We are interesting people.

Posted by: Jill | February 4, 2004 11:17 PM

Why is everyone so upset over a single nipple on puplic television. People are so offended and even repulsed judging by Mr. Forests comments over the site of the human body. You see more of the human body in art galleries and museums. No matter how self ritieous people are they still can't get over the ingrained belief that the human body and nudity in general is a bad or "demonic" thing.
In short just chill out. everyone has nipples girls and guys, although a guys serves no purpose and has hair on it. Thus is the hypocritcal nature of our country it's O.K. to show violence of any type on T.V but don't dare show a single nipple or youll incite this kind of bitching including me.
Thanks for letting me rant.

Well Well Well

Are we suprised, at Miss Jackson if your nasty? Please spare me the out cry of public shock. It is a tit for gods sake. Tits are good things. They are a wonder of nature and have gotten a bad rap for too long. The public would do better to worry about TV violence and less about a young womans showing off body parts. Tell your children the human body is a wonderful thing and not something to be ashamed of. We will be a better people for it.

Hooray for Boobie!!!

Posted by: Frisco | February 6, 2004 10:04 AM

I love to look at nakedness in the privacy of my home, but even this shocked and upset me. My brother's kids watched the show with them because they aren't old enough to really understand the words and grinding that was happening in the early part of the show, but they did understand the naked "boobie" that smacked them in the face on their large screen TV. Really now, there's a time and a place for everything and I don't think the Super Bowl is the time to show nudity. An apology is just not enough in my mind from any of the participants.

Kindly,
Donna Kaye

This all show how HYPOCRITE the American Society is. And you people form the USA allways think that you are the world and want to free other country's. Well let's say please stay home in the future and free your own country first...what a fuss about nipple's.

Posted by: Europe | February 6, 2004 12:11 PM

USA is shocked about a beautiful nipple. I'm shocked that most porn comes from the USA and that some people think oral sex is no sex. And the youth in the USA thinks that it's normal to srew around before you are 14 or 15 years old. That's really shocking. So i agree with Europe. In Europe we saw the first nipple on public television more than 30 years ago...So shake up your own society first, it's a totally mess up

I think it's a problem If you have your kids watching the Superbowl. Obviously in it's current state it would be Rated-R, but if you're gonna criticize the little nipple teaze, then what about P.Diddy and what he seems to represent. What about the beer commercials w/ half naked women .. with bigger BOOBIES. How about the bumping and grinding during the half-time show. The erection problem commercials.

It's clear that there was no advertisement or marketing toward 6 year olds. Did you see a frigin purple dinosaur? I would have to question your judgement for showing your kids this hoopla in the first place. It's a sport that I like to watch because of the brutality and awesome athletes, but does it show sportsman-like conduct .. NO. What values does it teach your kids? That maybe they'll become a ROCK-SUPERSTAR making millions from a shoe sponsor.

Janet & Justin would garner more respect if they'd just admit they did it for shock value.
Anytime you're promoting a new cd the morning after, you need a little headline magnet and the more "tit"alating the better. The television censors of yesterday have been in bed with profit-mongerers for so long now that they have forgotten what is right and what is wrong.
My 11 year old son was watching the Superbowl with me when that moment was forever burned into his memory. A white man ripping a bra off a black entertainer. He simply turned to me and said, "That can't be for real. Why would they do that?" Why indeed. Janet & Justin, shame on you. Shame on the network for allowing sex to be all they sell these days. How about adding a new word to your vocabulary - responsibility.

Every year the Superbowl is always such a "big deal" from the advertisements/commercials to the halftime shows (when are they ever going to have the performers sing anything new? I mean, Rhythm Nation was a good song... but it was even better 13 years ago).

The fact that they changed the rules for Superbowl halftime from 30 minutes to 45 really makes me think the Superbowl isn't about football anymore... It seems to be a LOT more about consumption and capitalism (yay, the "american way")... but I digress...

Get a grip, you silly Americans! You guys are so hypocritical. You LOVE celebrities. You can't live without your Entertainment Tonight, Jerry Springer, Reality TV, J-Lo, Paris Hilton or Schwartzenegger movies. You KNOW you wanted to see that boob. It did not offend you, it gave you something you wanted, just didn't expect it. Really... you asked for it.

And seriously, it's JUST A BOOB - nothing SERIOUS like child poverty, illiteracy in America or an occupation in a foreign country gone amok (good job, Dubya)... or a football game. Oh right, the football game was on... what was the score?

Next it will be... "It's just a dick, or It's just a pussy" and that's OK too! It seems the "world" is degrading more and more. I'm glad I'm a US citizen and that most of the people of my country have morals. The rest of the "world", as some people seem to think they represent, is unfortunately impacting the youth of this great country. NOT ALL KIDS MIND YOU, but some. I only hope they'll eventually see that degradation leads to nothing good before it's to late.

Sincerely,
Donna Kaye

25% of the worlds polution comes from this great country, where you can kill people with legal arms. What about the commercials between the superbowl its all about SEX, viagra etc. What about the lyrics of some rappers...? it's all pussy&money. The 4.6 Billion $$$ Porn industry!!!. This great country is confused and maybe a bit schizophrenic. In most West European countries the people are more realistic and relaxed about it, more modern and still having high honest morals. There are no dick and pussy on television, it's the same as when you begin smoking grass you'll end up using heroine..it's 2 simple minded.....US Citizens walk the way you talk!

The last email shows just how little people know about the US and about the world as a whole. It's not legal arms that kill people but the illegal arms. The people who register their guns are less than 1% of the guns used in murders in the US. As of 5am, 25 July 2003, the US Census Bureau estimates the US population at 291,598,700 people. In the year 2000, there where 9,008 reported homicides in the United States (these or US department of Justice statistics). Of these, some 5,945 involved guns of one sort or another. From these statistics, we can see that a mere 1.13% of worldwide purported gun deaths occured in the United States, country where it is alleged that between 37% and 43% of all guns are found. I find these numbers to be highly interesting and they inspire me to ask, where are the rest of these gun deaths taking place? From what I can see, between 57% and 63% of guns world wide are accounting for 98.87% of all gun deaths. I think the numbers are actually even more extreme than that. Lets be uncharitable and assume that the European Union has similar gun death stats as what is possessed in the US. In the US we find that the guns we own account for between 0.000022 and 0.000025 murders per gun. If we go with the low end of this range, we might conclude that the EU's 84 million guns account for some 1,848 gun deaths. So between them the EU and the USA account for a mere 1.48% of the 525,600 annual gun deaths while accounting for a maximum figure of of between 50% and 56% of the world's guns. What can we conclude from this? That between 44% and 50% of guns account for 98.6% of all gun deaths.

I think the foregoing numbers show clearly that the issue is not the prevalence of guns that is causing the problem. I think it shows that the behavior of those with the guns is the problem. Indeed, when one considers that the approximately 700,000,000 people of the USA and the EU account for only 11% of the world's 6,300,000,000 people, one is prompted to ask why is it that we account of only 1.4 percent of the world's gun deaths, especially when one considers that we possess just over half of all the world's guns? Is it perhaps that it is people that are responsible for killing people and that the possesson of guns is not a significant factor? After all, if the ease of access to guns had a causal relationship with gun deaths, one would expect to see a higher per capita incidence of gun deaths that correlates to a higher per capita incidence of gun possession.

Rather, one sees the opposite. In America and the EU one finds 50% to 54% of all guns and 11% of all people. The people in this area possess between 0.45 and 0.52 guns per capita whereas the rest of the world possesses guns at a rate of 0.05 and 0.06 guns per capita. In other words, Americans and the European Union members experience about 0.00001 gun deaths per capita versus 0.00009 gun deaths per capita experienced in the rest of the world. This despite the fact that the USA/EU account for 50% or more of all guns. To put it another way, a gun anywhere else in the world is 89 times as likey to kill someone as it is in the USA.

Now for some disclaimers. I intentionally excluded stats on accidental gun deaths and on gun deaths involving the shooting of criminals by law enforcement. I took the risk, a reasonable one to my mind that the numbers on both of these are low enough so as not to be statistically significant. Also, I have limited my discussion to homicides involving guns in the United States.

On pollution I'll just say that yes we produce the majority of the world's pollution but that's because we are such an industrialized nation in comparison with other countries with larger populus that are not as industrialized. Of course the US solves so many of the worlds troubles because of the industries here that have developed vaccines, medicines, medical equipment, etc that have changed the life expectancy by nearly 10 years since I was born.

On your topic of porn and commercials during the Super Bowl. One person's comments was that this is not a family show which I couldn't disagree more. My husband always watched the Super Bowl with our kids while they were growing up and most people would say the same here in the US. It's a time for families to come together to celebrate the most anticipated sporting event this country knows. Yes, the commercials went too far. Of course you're preaching to the preacher here because they were inappropriate for a family show like the Super Bowl. Of course none of them plopped a tit in my face like Janet. You say grow up America and quit being so simple minded. I say it's not a matter of being simple minded but knowing what's right from wrong.

Much love to ALL,
Donna Kaye

ok im going to weigh in here... a bit after the fact, i know, as the mother of two pre teens i would much rather have my children gain an appreciation for the human body then to see a bunch of pituitary cases sacking each other on the grid iron.. but that's just me.

I got a chance to see the super bowl show and from a woman's and a Christian at that point of view I saw nothing wrong in the nipple gate incident. What most offend me is that people are quick to judge and condemn Ms Jackson for the nipple incident where as they don’t seem to condemn the showing of Queer as Folks and I don't here anyone condemning same sex marriage as been wrong. As it says in the bible, Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it [is] abomination, meaning a man should not lie with man as he would do a woman and a woman should not lie with another woman as she would a man, and our kids are exposed to that sort of abomination on a daily basis and everyone thinks it's ok and just one the viewing of one boob has everyone going up in arms as far as I see America is more Sodom and Gomorrah than what was written in the bible.
