Low Gallery announces a solo exhibition titled "Quantum Reality" by San Francisco based artist, Mars-1 which opens on Saturday, January 8, 2005 (6-10pm) and runs till January 30.
Over the last 5 months, Mars has created a new body of work featuring distant subconscious universes. Using wood, paper, ink, water colors, pencil, oils, these mixed media works dive deep into a world that only Mars can envision.
For years Mars has been creating mainly character driven pieces. "This new body of work illustrates where these characters might come from", says Mars. "After I finish this body of work, it'll make more sense to me… being able to see it from outside my own head". Through the idea Quantum Universe, there is no start or end to it. Once the universe dies, it is reborn again on imaginary time. Mars's created reality could potentially exist. "The title of the show helps the viewer open up to the possibility of it being an actual place", he says… "Very psychedelic but also based on the scientific possibility of its existence. It adds another element to the universe within."
Mars mixes elements of graffiti art, American Indian culture, Japanese animation, even the drawings of comic book legend Moebius in his work. "I like (combining) different ideas," he says. "I have a deep interest in space and the possibility of extraterrestrials. It opens my mind to different, deeper possibilities of existence. That plays a real big role in my art. We have the ability to bring our imagination into existence. That's how I view my (artwork). All of this stuff comes out the creative end and reforms into something new, but you still see remnants of (the inspiration)."
Mars has exhibited work across the United States with shows in Detroit, New York, Toronto, Portland, and Los Angeles. He created his own toy figure for Strange Co… Along side other artists, Damon Soule, David Lee, and Nome, Mars is featured in the book "4 Words". He has been interviewed and featured in Juxtapoz, Staf, Mass Appeal and many other magazines and web sites. He lives and works out of San Francisco.
"The evaluation of our perception of mathematical reality causes a new sense to develop, which gives us access to a reality that is neither visual nor auditory, but something else altogether"
