RES invites you to our monthly series showcasing brand new music videos, short films and motion graphics.

This month we will present the RESFEST Audience Choice Awards for Best Short Film (Peter Cornwell’s Ward 13) and Best Music Video (Michel Gondry’s Walkie Talkie Man). We will also screen audience favorites from RESFEST Japan and Canada.

The evening will also feature brand new works from Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), Olivier Gondry and Airside plus new music videos such as Shynola’s latest for Beck, Death Cab for Cutie, Lemon Jelly, the Postal Service and more!

Interview: Wook Kim

Wook Kim, Hustler of Patterns, 30, New York, NY

Wook Kim sees patterns in every day life and quietly files them away in his head. An avid daydreamer, he is always absorbing his environment. And lucky for us because Wook eventually creates ethereal wall art for our consumption. His world is filled with animals and exotic motifs. Wook graduated from Cranbrook Academy of Art's high profile MFA program and is now teaching textile art at the Rhode Island School of Design. The NY Times recently gave him a shout out. The art world is noticing. It’s about time.

How many careers have you had? What is your current title?

Careers: Artist, Graphic Designer, Textile Designer, Sweatshop Worker, and Teacher. Current Title: Life Juggler.

What project will you be working on next?

Projects that will let me grow and build my utopia.

Your house is burning down. What one possession (aside from human/animal life) would you grab on the way out?

Material objects are replaceable.

When and how did we meet?

David spoke highly of both you and Silvio, during my last few months at Cranbrook. I have to say that I was excited to meet you both. I met you both at the opening of the Joan Mitchell Show at the Whitney during the summer of 2002. Souris you were very animated and Silvio was very reserved. The conversation I remember that night was talking to you about old video game consoles, and I believe that you had just purchased EJ an Atari 2600. It wasn't until I got back from my summer trip and it was in the beginning of the Fall, when we started to have lengthier conversations. I realized and felt that you and the Don were people I were happy to let into my life. You have both been tremendous help for your kindness and for all the times I needed peeps to talk to and lean on.

zoom zoom zoomer.

i've always been fond of two-wheeled transportation. exposed to nortons, harleys and a few rice rockets i find motorcycles dangerously sexy. and for the same reason, i refuse to ride on one. however, for the hell of it, i'm fancying the honda zoomer. originally released in japan in 2001, the zoomer is currently available in the UK (everywhere else this summer). created in asaka to reflect the "varied lifestyles of today's youth" it looks like a skinny ATV or a suped up dirt bike. with a 50cc engine, it's also a nice alternative for getting around town. this bad ass scooter is way cooler than a vespa, albeit equally dangerous in los angeles. i want a black one custom painted with pink flames outlined in silver. seeing as this will never happen, i'll cruise on chrome on a low rider bike instead.

"Beauty in the Breakdown," the Los Angeles debut solo exhibition by Chicago-based artist Laura Mosquera opens at sixspace this Saturday, February 19th with a reception from 7-10pm. Featuring a new body of her narrative work depicting figures in abstract background planes, Mosquera presents four acrylic-on-canvas paintings (three of which are large scale) and a series of drawings.

Laura Mosquera’s work is grounded in contemporary human experiences and reflections of everyday life exploring the representation of reality and the perception of what is real and its construction using non-linear narrative. They are cinematic depictions of seemingly inconsequential moments describing everyday narratives. While there is no linear narrative there is enough information to suggest a mood open to the interpretation of the viewer. The drawings and paintings are constructed with the use of snapshots. The figures are never posed, but rather captured in a moment, unaware of being documented. The work acts as movie stills, shots of a moment in time. Within the paintings the distance between the color as photographed (as it really was) and the color as painted creates the interpretive space for the viewer.

winter in socal is sweet. it's okay to be jealous. i've been busy with guests (six in the last eight weeks) and work. both are a good busy. i'm feeling it. happy valentine's. i hate this holiday but i heart you. cheers.

a lot of thoughts rushed to mind when i found out about the new deitch projects reality tv show, artstar. i passed out. but now i'm okay. listen, i know we've all watched every season of the "real world" (yes you have) and sometimes some other really really bad copycats, but yikes! i thought we covered every subject/industry?! corporate careers. check. daredevils. check. makeovers. check. airlines. check. single losers. check infinity!

leave no fifteen minutes behind. hey art world, it's time for your close up! and of course jeffrey, it had to be you. and you're calling it a television documentary? OMG. get real. it's more junk television! we know the art world is mad. there's lots of pressure and it's super competitive. drama is sure to ensue. i suppose it all adds up to the perfect reality show set up. artists are a sensitive bunch. please take care of them. i wish i had something more positive to say about this. truly. good luck folks. i'll be watching.

sifting through old emails, i was reconnected with cario owltooth's wacky and absurdly interesting illustrations (thanks rob). i cruised through his "drawings of art" book #0 half a dozen times. laughing aloud like a fool. the drawings are so bad they're good (like not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good). the messages are highdea-driven. i'm a fan.

From Russell Simmons and the Producers of DEF COMEDY JAM, four more historic days/nights of DEF POETRY JAM will be filmed in New York on February 22, 23, 24, 25, 2005 for HBO. MORE SHOWS, MORE POETRY -- BE PART OF THE LIVE DEF POETRY EXPERIENCE!

There will be two shows each night - 6:30 PM and 9:30 PM except for WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY, February 23rd and 24th when there will be three shows - 2:00 PM, 6:30 PM and 9:30 PM. The shows will feature roots stars and future sensations -- URSULA RUCKER to SEKU SUNDIATA. Each show will present 10 different poets. Mos Def will host all TEN shows. Interview: Alaina Browne

Alaina Browne, Hustler of Eats, 30, San Francisco, CA

If eating well is one of life’s luxuries, than Alaina lives a very full life. She co-hosts Nintendo Sundays at her Bay area apartment and likes to snuggle with Raptor, her cat and Chelsie, her dog. How many careers have you had? What is your current title?

I don't know that I've had a career yet, but I've certainly had a few jobs. I've been a barista, banker, call center sales person, project and product managers, and student. Currently working for Mule Design where I have several titles, including VP of t-shirts.

What project will you be working on next?

Researching, writing, and updating Afullbelly.com is the project de jour, and keeps me as busy as I allow it. There's also a documentary film about my mom(s) and food I'd like to make, and a new job.

Your house is burning down. What one possession (aside from human/animal life) would you grab on the way out?

My laptop, keeper and protector of my digital lifestyle, including photos and music.

When and how did we meet?

Justin gave an email introduction after realizing we all lived on 21st Street (and had a lot to talk about). We met for dinner at Sumile, a meal I will remember as my first sighting of fresh wasabi root.

Stockholm - Loyal Magazine Gallery Opening (02/03/05)

LOYAL MAGAZINE OPENS GALLERY IN STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN

Art magazine LOYAL opens the doors to its own art gallery in Stockholm, Sweden this Thursday Feb 3. The premiere show presents San Francisco Bay area artist CHRIS LINDIG in his first solo exhibition in Sweden, entitled WE ARE PSYCHOLOGY. The show features a collection of Chris's bold paintings in which he uses symbology from religious cult, heavy metal, hot turbo cars, sex, and death.

The gallery is located in Vasastan, Stockholm at Torsgatan 59. The opening reception is this Thursday, Feb 3rd, 6-10 p.m. Drinks and music by Loyal and friends. In the back room, we will hold a silent auction of 20 signed and hand-printed silkscreen posters by Chris Lindig. The party is co-hosted with our good friends at Club 76. After the reception the evening will continue at Tranan until 1 am with DJ Kai Stavre.
