compact/space is pleased to announce If you lived here, you’d be home by now, an exhibition of photographs, paintings, video and live installation by Ian James, Cathy Kim, Glenna Jennings, Meghann McCrory and Chelsea Molnar and Charchi Stinson curated by Eve Fowler.
Collapsed homes, scary bushes, rock-throwing sessions, ESL lessons and ex-lover baseball cards abound in this group show about how humans try to leave evidence of their respective passages through space and time. The artists observe and/or create their own architectural realities, which are ultimately rendered uninhabitable for public, personal or physical reasons.

Yo. Steph's in town! This Fall, the Lady Bogin will have a place to call home for more than a couple of months. She's going to chill in London while she works on her PhD in "Artsy Fartsy". We've rendezvous'd in Los Angeles, New York City and Paris. Come September, we're going to add London to the list. How many of you have vagabond friends that can clean up this good? Kind of crazy considering she spends most of her days working in dark caves or ruins. Meow!

Jack Hirschman reads from The Arcanes, published by Multimedia Edizioni
The Arcanes represent, in Jack Hirschmans vast poetic production, a fundamental and extraordinary element, the most advanced point of his questing. It comprises 126 long and orchestrated compositions, collected from more than thirty years of a particular poetic inquiry, which ground the political engagement and social themes, ever present in his poetry, with stormy leaps of mind, heart and soul, and personal events and references.
The volume is presented in its chronological development from 1972 to 2006, encompassing its entire output. In these works, fragments of poetic insight explode, from which the themes and images engaged by the poet emerge, which knowingly fuse reality with metaphysics, actuality with the memory of the past.

Yo Gabba Gabba is my favorite television show not on television. It's a crime these cool folks haven't found a production deal yet. They've got Biz Markie, beatboxer extraordinaire teaching beats-of-the-day to your babes! They've got awesomely hyped up tots yelling out their names and demonstrating a boogie down production I often do myself. And they've got ridiculously catchy songs about parties in your tummy! Please! The world needs more Yo Gabba Gabba. Finally, something for you and your spawn to love equally!

Spike Jonze is looking for a kid to cast as the lead in his new film. The film is the live screen adaptation of the classic children's book "Where the Wild Things Are" and he is hoping to find a young boy to play Max. Below are the specifics.
Max, and this boy, should be:
- 7-9 years old. Ideally, 8 years old. A 7-year-old would need to be pretty precocious. A 9-year-old couldn't be too tall/mature-looking.
- Sensitive, loving, lovable, smart, with a sense of humor.
- Playful, rambunctious, mischievous.
- He needs to be the sort of kid who's very creative but also very active -- the sort who might create an elaborate sand castle but also relish destroying it.
- Basically, he needs to be "all boy," just as Max is in the book.
- Dark hair is a plus.
- He should be natural -- unself-conscious, not too actorly

Thomas Campbell
Yep
July 15 - August 12, 2006
Opening reception Saturday, July 15, 6 - 8 pm
Roberts & Tilton is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by California artist, Thomas Campbell. Encompassing a broad range of artistic media, Campbell perpetually introduces his audience to new stages of his own artistic evolution. The works, unmistakably executed with evidence of the human hand are painted, drawn, cut, sewn or modeled with intricate renderings of characters and text. The end result is a sophisticated dichotomy that is part concept, part handcraft, which together offer an insightful look at contemporary life. In his first solo show with the gallery, Campbell infuses his distinctly unique style into the paintings, drawings and sculptures that comprise his fantastical world. The images that hold figuratively abstract freeness are a deliberately simple affirmation of Campbell’s self-titled “stuff making,” as well as his own daily life.

The centrepiece of the design is a spectacular ovoid-shaped inflatable canopy that floats above the Gallery's lawn. Sampling Oakland
Some say Oakland today, is what San Francisco was in the 70s: a place where younger artists can afford to spread out, hang out, work hard, and create a thriving arts scene, one that's now garnering national attention. For years, Oakland has been sprouting performance spaces, galleries and collective live work/environments where musicians, writers, filmmakers and visual artists of every discipline influence each other's work. It's a vibrant artistic community fueled by vision and self-determination. YBCA brings a piece of the excitement surrounding the First Friday art crawl across the bridge with a life-amplified exhibition organized by a group of Oakland curators. Reflecting the collaborative spirit of artist-run venues such as Mama Buzz, Ego Park, Lobot Gallery, Oaklandish, 21 Grand and Black Dot Collective, YBCA presents a broad sampling of Oakland's best.

CASEY O'CONNELL and ROBERT HARDGRAVE: NEW PAINTINGS
JULY 15th - AUGUST 19th, 2006
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday July 15th 7-11pm
BLK/MRKT Gallery presents a two-person show featuring stunning new work by San Fransisco's Casey O'Connell and Seattle's Robert Hardgrave (aka FarmerBob). In addition to non-collaborative paintings, they are creating a site-specific mural installation not to be missed.
Both O'Connell and Hardgrave's processes are in a sense completely opposite, yet they share a fascination with symbolism and ritual; each of them deliberately encodes their private experiences into their painting. Following different paths and speaking in different tongues, they have each found a way to express and transcend private terrors through the creation of art whose dark, edgy beauty represents a reconciliation with the past and faith in the future. And that is certainly lucky for us...
For more info, please visit us online at BMG.

Last year, I snapped about 15,000 digital photographs with my Canon S70. A little more than half are posted on my Flickr acccount. I have always wanted to learn how to really use my camera and in good faith on every long distance trip, I pack the manual. Yet...something about the manual really turns me off. I'm more of an experiemental hands-on kind of learner. I need to poke and prod. And yet, a year and a half into clicking away, I'm still not very S70-educated.
Not too long ago, I stumbled across the awesome photo know-how site, Photojojo. I signed up for their self-proclaimed "damn fine photo newsletter" and they delivered as promised. Photojojo writes with a very simple to comprehend and can-do attitude. I am actually learning from their newsletter and feel less intimidated by my camera. I totally heart them.

Fiebre! ~ Sunday, July 9th ~
Okay, so what if all the teams we were excited about didn't make it to the finals... and only a bunch of euros are left. So what if this can no longer be the brazilian samba madness party we were hoping for (damn that Nike curse). So what? A good futbol game is STILL a GOOD FUTBOL GAME... The WORLD CUP is still the COPA MUNDIAL... And a party @ the "Chaplin House" (notoriously coined by Mr. Druhaha) is STILL a PARTY @ the Chaplin House. So, in honor of this truly international affair that occurs only once every 4 years & for anyone who has caught or been touched by the World Cup fever, we bring to you...

During the late fifties and early sixties a cinematic genre was established through the genius of casting real life bodybuilders in the roles of figures from Greco Roman mythology. The most famous of all these bodybuilders was Steve Reeves. His first excursion into the realm of Zeus made him an an international star. The film was Le Fatiche di Ercole (1958). When it was released stateside as Hercules in 1960, the film caused a sensation at the box-office and the "peplum" or sword and sandal films became vogue. From this point on nearly two hundred films would follow the formula established in Hercules.

“Consumerism & Product” #2
A Commercial Gallery hosts a Non-profit Gallery
Gallery Revisited curates show of LA Art Association Artists
Reception: Saturday July 15 6-10pm
Show continues until August 19
This is the first cross-publicity venture of its kind that bridges the business gap between commercial art galleries and non-profit art galleries.
The goal of this exhibit is to showcase compelling work and raise awareness about the two types of art-selling venues and to enlighten audiences about the benefits of supporting artists. By abandoning the distinction between commercial & non-profit gallery tax status, one core purpose remains – to facilitate the careers of artists by not only providing a venue in which their work can be displayed & to generate a collector base that furthers the artists’ careers through acquisition and exposure.

The flight plans include basic anticipated information such as departure and arrival points, estimated time of arrival, alternate airports in case of bad weather, the pilot's name, and number of passengers. These plans additionally provide a way of alerting rescuers if the scheduled flight is overdue.

Rubens and His Printmakers
Date: Daily, July 5 - September 24, 2006
Location: East Pavilion, Plaza Level, Getty Center
Admission: Free
Peter Paul Rubens employed a small army of artists to make prints after his most successful paintings, drawings, and tapestry designs, thus increasing his fame throughout Europe. This exhibition explores the close working relationship between Rubens and his printmakers, elucidating a fascinating aspect of artistic collaboration. Not satisfied with making mere reproductions of his pictures, Rubens encouraged his artists to modify his compositions, which he also often reworked. In attempting to meet Rubens' strict demands, his printmakers contributed significantly to the development of Western printmaking techniques. The display's key theme of collaboration offers a supporting dialogue to the exhibition Rubens and Brueghel: A Working Friendship.

Lately we've been wondering why Swap Meet hasn't been raided in a joint RIAA/NSA skull-crushing magneto-sweep. We think it's because they've seen Big Trouble in Little China. The lawyers are all like "Hey, go to Chinatown and find out what this 'swapy karaoke' business is all about." And the skull-crushers are all like "Pfft! I'm not messing with that frickin' lightning guy!"
Come to Swap Meet. Where it's safe.
This past May, Royal de Luxe performed a spectacular puppet show for the people of London. Below is just one example of what amazed and captured the hearts of all who were lucky enough to witness the public spectacle:

LA-Lit interviews Will Alexander
Sunday, June 25 at 2pm
At Betalevel
We’d like to invite you to a live radio recording, poetry reading & conversation this coming Sunday June 25 at 2 p.m. at Betalevel in Chinatown. Will Alexander will be the featured writer on LA-lit, a radio show co-curated by Mathew Timmons & Stephanie Rioux. The show (& hence the recording) lasts a little over an hour and will be about 30 minutes of reading & about 30 minutes of questions & answers/further questions – alternating between the two modes in hopes of creating a space for dynamic conversation.
Will Alexander is a poet and visual artist. Working from Los Angeles, he has updated the alchemy of surrealist vision (found in such poets as Aimé Césaire and Raymond Roussel) to write his own cosmic parables, in his own electric incandescent language. His poetic works include Exobiology as Goddess, Asia & Haiti, Above the Human Nerve Domain, Towards the Primeval Lightning Field, and The Stratospheric Canticles. He has two works forthcoming: a novella, Alien Weaving, from Green Integer; and a book of poems, Sri Lankan Loxodrome, from Canopic Press. His most recent book, a trilogy of novels, Sunrise and Armageddon, is out from from Spuyten Duyvil. The International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England named Will Outstanding Scholar of the 20th Century and he was also recognized by the Whiting Foundation for exceptional literary achievement in New York. In 2002 Will received a fellowship for poetry from the California Arts Council.

Reception: Thursday, 22 June 2006, 6 — 8 pm
For his first exhibition at DCKT Contemporary, Aaron Krach stakes a claim to a piece of the rich and varied history of artists inspired by New York City. “My new work fits somewhere between late, jazzy Piet Mondrian and early, East Village Madonna,” says Krach. “It’s a genuine but perhaps futile attempt to capture the beauty of Manhattan streets and the sex appeal of pure, unadulterated pop culture.”

181 Martel Presents: June Thirteenth
181 Martel is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by June 13th. A collaboration fueled by the energy and creativity of Dr. Romanelli and José Parlá.
The show is comprised of a unique collection that defines the vision
and flow of June 13th. This compilation introduces a number of unique collaborations with Visvim, Anachronorm, and Dita; some of the world’s freshest and most innovative brands.
June13th creates original artwork on leather patchwork by Dr. Romanelli with meticulous designs by José Parla’s calligraphy and painting techniques packed and jumbled with layers of written stories, poems, names and motifs.

There's a lot to say about creatives Diana Hong and Peter Sutherland. Until I can get a proper interview done, I'm just going to leave you with a couple of words about the two: playground love.
Diet Coke, Mentos and a lot of ingenuity will get you noticed. Maybe backyard scientists, Fritz Grobe and Stephen Voltz can coordinate the water show for the next hot Vegas property. Bellagio, watch your back!

Hello Graffiti Art & Film Lovers (go see this movie, I will),
The indie film Quality of Life comes to LA for its theatrical debut hot after a successful run (multiple sold-out nights) in NYC. It opens Memorial Day Weekend on Friday, May 26th at Laemmle's Fairfax 3 (on Beverly Blvd.).
Shot on location in San Francisco's Mission District, Quality of Life is not a documentary, but a narrative drama. It sheds light on a clandestine graffiti subculture, with an authentic and riveting story of two young taggers who struggle to maintain their friendship as their lives unravel and the cops close in.
A former at-risk kid himself, director Benjamin Morgan's connection to the underground youth of today accentuates the film’s Cinéma Vérité style. Says Morgan, “I set out to make this film to expose the absurdity of so-called ‘quality of life’ laws. The tough-on-crime political climate has become endemic in the United States. After working in the juvenile justice and mental health fields for over a decade, I became frustrated with the systemic flaws inherent in youth programs...”

Rachel Owens: Overthrows
May 18 - June 24, 2006
Reception for the Artist: Thursday, May 18, 6-8 pm
"These counties are almost entirely green land with small coverts; there is almost complete absence of wire… so that anyone mounted on a clean-jumping horse with plenty of pace and stamina may, if so inclined, follow wherever a fox may lead hounds…. In fact, there is nothing whatever to prevent him from following and seeing the whole of any hunt from a find to the kill (once he is clear of the stampede from covertside), except his own limitations or those of his horse." DinnerNet Dinner Access GRANTED!
Tuesday, May 16th at 8pm
Hello. What does that mean??
DinnerNet is a laboratory concerned primarily with the proliferation of highly multifarious combinatoric mutations of dinner and fine literature.
With dinner sometimes comes anxiety. This can be a problem because we all eat dinner. We all eat dinner a lot. The Internet makes it possible for all of us dinner eating people to be together. We can be in a place where we can truly let our selves drift away from the brutal physicality of dinner.
Together together together.

Media maker Saiman Chow created "A Psychedelic, Cartoon-Noir" for the adicolor black campaign. What you see is a freakish Tim Burton'esque Panda and Fish short film; what you feel is a bit of nausea and admiration for such an imagination. Although the content might be infantile, puerile it's not.

BrainTree and the Theory of Everything
An exhibition in the Front Gallery
Featuring the work of Anli Liu
Exhibition runs: May 13, 2006 - May 20, 2006
Opening reception: Saturday, May 13, 5-7 PM
Gallery hours: Wednesday - Saturday, 3-6 PM
This event takes place at The LAB, 2948 16th Street @ Capp, San Francisco
Free admission
BrainTree and the Theory of Everything is Anli Liu's visual reflection on the myriad of images, information, and experiences that she has accumulated through her study of neurology. Here she appropriates the visual imagery of modern medicine--including biochemical maps, diagrams, and flowcharts--to create a series of landscape drawings and installations. Incorporating patient detail and working with the handicrafts of drawing and stitching, she subverts the detached and reductionist nature of scientific knowledge and transforms its symbol systems into a kind of personal landscape. Stylistically, Braintree hovers somewhere between the internal and external, masculine and feminine, reductionist and metaphysical, scientific and personal.

The Haunted Hacienda: the art of the Mexican horror film

Opening Reception Friday, May 5th, 7-10pm

Mexican horror films have been hidden from American Cinema long enough. These films are, without a doubt, the closest thing to a cinematic acid trip you are ever going to encounter. Although influenced by the American gothic tradition, these films possess quite an antique soul that is uniquely Mexican. They reflect the Mexican heritage of pagan ritual against the dynamic of Catholic theology.

"A Brief History of the Color Red". By Roman Coppola and Andy Bruntel. Think of it as a trippy history lesson by insanely talented fourth graders.

Unlike surf movies, I never tire of watching skaters do their thing. So it was with great pleasure that I was able to attend the screening for Wassup Rockers, Larry Clark's new film about teenage skaters in Los Angeles. It was impossible not to know that we had arrived at the right spot as a lot of the skate community, people who had little reason to be on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica waited excitedly. Separating the actors from the locals was near impossible in a crowd of the usual suspects.
The quick description for Wassup Rockers would be “It’s Kids (Larry’s film from 10 years ago) but in South Central, Los Angeles.” But that description doesn’t do the film enough justice. Clearly, Larry Clark still has something to say about America’s youth (especially young male culture) -- a subject he seems to know and capture well.
Wassup Rockers is the story about Latino skateboarders living in tough South Central who do not conform to the hip-hop lifestyle. It’s tough in the hood but ironically enough when the boys venture to the Westside that’s when all hell breaks loose. Navigating the Los Angeles landscape is an adrenalin rush since the film is shot nearly all documentary style. Was it a fictional film or a documentary? Narrative social commentary? Maybe a combination of all of the above.
The best part of the whole screening? Lil Jon sat behind me and his opening movie comments were kind of hilarious. For a good time, check out Wassup Rockers, coming to a theatre near you.

Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery is pleased to present the first New York solo show by Long Island City based artist Ian Pedigo. The show, titled "Original Products Have Lapsed" will include sculptures and flat works made from found detritus and salvaged debris. The show will run from May 6 through June 11, 2006. There will be a reception for the artist on Friday May 4, 7 to 9 PM.
There is an archaeological quality to Pedigo's work, carrying anthropological implications about both the materials used and the recontextualization of those materials into sculptural elements. The discarded objects reflect cultural attitudes about the immediately inhabited urban environment. As the natural forces of degradation begin to claim the objects for the indifferent city streets, Pedigo reclaims them for the cultural discourse, imbuing them with new form and meaning.

Pre-fab homes have really hit this country by storm (thanks to dwell magazine). So it’s been really interesting watching this prototype Living Homes pre-fab building go up 1.5 blocks from my own home. I’ve been watching contractors pour/build the foundation for the past six months and a few days ago, nearly the whole unit was plopped into place. I have to say, I think architect Ray Kappe did a fine job. The unit itself is lovely, but the concept is striking as stated in their tagline, “Good homes that are good for you.” It’s only appropriate that this showroom house is in Santa Monica; my only wish is that they keep the pre-fab pricing affordable. It’s going to be exciting to follow the progress in the next months to come.

Available at Krudmart. $32.
From Tofer: Now I don't have any personal beef w/ Pharrell. In fact, he's one of the only people I can think of that I'd even consider trading places with but the Skateboard P thing bothers me to no end.
Aside from a streetplant in a Zoo York ad, has there ever been any proof to the contrary? It's like when the Alterna-Kids started wearing Airwalk Ones in middle school. We get it, you broke the mold. Grow the mustache back pussy.

The majority of game developers do not enter the interactive entertainment industry to make bank. Most do it for the love of "play". Considering how big the games industry is today (three commas worth), isn't it odd that not one developer is making a $20,000,000 paycheck per game? Where are the Johnny Depp / Julia Robert equivalents of the games world? If the industry's going Hollywood, then why not really go Hollywood? Did I just say that aloud? Apologies.
Game Developer released its 5th Annual Salary Survey. Following are salaries of game industry personnel with between three to six years of employment:

Dear Readers of Hustler of Culture,
I don't know if you're following the current controversy involving Ray Fong aka artist Barry McGee in the news, but Eric from Giant Robot wants to share his sentiments with you. Here you go:
Fight for Ray FongI know Asian Americans rally through emails. It seems like any worthwhile independent project or controversial topic spreads quickly this way. This is one of them, and honestly, it's not the most important topic, but it is something that I think you should know.
Yesterday, I received a pair of Ray Fong Adidas. They are truly beautiful shoes. The box, laces, and details are amazing. I doubt a sneaker can get much better. I put up some photos at:
http://www.giantrobot.com/blogs/eric
I realize there's a lot of controversy over the Ray Fong image that appears on this shoe. It's been on CNN and BBC in addition to the viral emails I mentioned. As a friend of the artist Barry McGee, I feel the need to come forward and address the topic.
Surely if you are reading this blog you probably read others. And according to Technorati, lots of you read PostSecret, the "ongoing community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a homemade postcard".
Frank Warren, accidental artist and curator recently published the most requested secrets in his new book, Post Secret: Extraordinary Confessions From Ordinary Lives. I dig PostSecret for its old-schoolness. Snail mail. Handwrittten cards. Stamps! It's like finding someone's diary but every page is filled with the "good stuff". The blog makes perfect sense as a book. Maybe you can be a part of the sequel. Mail in your own secret today!

Hello, fans of Blondie! To commemorate Blondie's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Marc Jacobs has created this limited edition Blondie t-shirt in aptly punk-titled colors "die young stay pink" and "atomic green". Deborah Harry has requested that all proceeds from the $20 t-shirts benefit the Riverkeeper organization to protect New York's Hudson River and New York City's water supply. How incredibly...politically correct?! Grab yours while you can. And then grab me one too please. XS. Thanks. Available now at Marc by Marc Jacobs.

GALLERY HOURS: TUES-SAT 9-5
M+B Fine Art Los Angeles is pleased to present A Butterfly Fluttered By: Photographs of the West, an exhibition of color photographs by photographer Lisa Eisner. For her latest body of work, Eisner traveled the West—from California to Wyoming—exploring the spirit of a land that has captivated the imaginations of people since our country’s inception. Her sensual renderings of America’s settled frontier effectively captures the sense of spirituality in a region saturated with color, history and folklore, presenting an alluring portrait of the West.
As a Wyoming native, Eisner has been documenting the world of the West since the early Nineties. Her fascination and interest in the subcultures, ceremonies and rituals of the West has contributed to two previous bodies of work: Shriners and Rodeo Girl, both of which were published by Greybull Press. This is Eisner’s third manifestation in her continued documentation of the subject.

Deviate April 15 - May 7
Allison Cole and Genevieve Castree
Reception Saturday April 15 Reception 7-10 p.m.
Like the best mythological stories Genevieve Castree has an uncanny ability to manifest universal sentiments and truths yet in an accessible updated adaptation that balances comics with her own personal and abstract internal language. The results are careful and delicate drawings of characteristically dark and sparsely populated universes that are poetic, surprising and lonely "the secrets of which one yearns, as always, to be a bit more privy to." For this show Castree uses that same sensitivity for an amazing new series of drawings many of which revolve around the theme of war.

Adam McEwen
My Mistake
April 8 – 29, 2006
Opening reception: Saturday, April 8th, 6-9 pm
The Jack Hanley Gallery, San Francisco is pleased to present the first West Coast solo exhibition of the work of New York-based artist Adam McEwen, which will include paintings, photographs and installation.
Adam McEwen is known for his work in which he references and subverts the often overlooked or tuned-out symbols and icons of everyday and pop culture. As described in the Whitney Biennial 2006 catalogue, he utilizes “a series of interventions that jolt us temporarily out of our indifference, owing to over-exposure, toward the signs that dominate our daily lives…McEwen excavates our obsession, in a tabloid-dominated culture.” He often plays with the recognizable graphic styles of “Sorry We Are Closed” window signs or the large-scale “sale” type banners found at car dealerships, subtly changing the message or wording which may go unnoticed, due to their visual familiarity. With a similar approach, McEwen exploits the form of the obituary by inserting and essentially killing living celebrities through the act of printing their obituary (as a continuation of or reference to the typical newspaper practice of writing and updating obituaries for celebrities prior to their deaths.)

Laura Ball + Andrew Schoultz
April 6 - May 13, 2006
Opening Reception: Thursday, April 6, 6-8pm
Morgan Lehman is pleased to present the work of Laura Ball and Andrew Schoultz in both artists’ first New York debut. Hailing from San Francisco, the artists create fantastical narratives with underlying elements of political awareness. The works on view confront issues including femininity, community, domination, and war. These topics are represented in each artist’s own artistic style: Laura Ball guides us through an exploration of her dream-like, beautifully crafted watercolors; and Andrew Schoultz expresses his ideals with his explosive, obsessive mark-making techniques.

Mike Houston: "American Smells"
Mike Houston is a Brooklyn based artist, long-time instrumental member of the Barnstormers painting crew and co-founder of the legendary Cannonball Press.
Mike Houston's new collection of work, entitled American Smells, consists of new silkscreen and letterpress prints, paintings on the wall and vinyl floor tiles, directly and indirectly relating to the quirky specifics of consumerism, sloth, determination and collective thought that are part and parcel of the American Circus.
Drawing from television, advertisements, observation and the general American subconscious, Mike's work relies on a simple illustrative aesthetic whose influences are underground comics, populist printmaking, signage, and pure absurdist silliness.

Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery is pleased to present the first New York solo show by San Francisco-based artist Samuel Lopes. The show, titled STICKS will include 20 acrylic paintings on wood hung in tight formation on the walls of the gallery.
The STICKS paintings represent an extensive body of work centered on scenes of communal living, self-sustainability, groupthink and stories of queer radical transformation. The characters Lopes employs shift from fox to boy to girl to cat to country house through their group activities far from the mainland of society. The isolation of this self-made family brings them together in ways that are as often entertaining as they are unsettling. The narrative that runs through the STICKS paintings frequently mirrors Lopes's own life story, at least in its attempt to articulate ambiguity, placelessness, and redefinition.
Samuel Lopes lives and paints in San Francisco.
