The 2009 Friday Night Jazz series closes with the nine-piece Monktet. Originally founded by arranger/composer/saxophonist John Magruder in the early eighties, and reenergized by his wife and collaborator Joy Magruder, the Monktet plays the music of Thelonius Monk, as arranged by John Magruder and others, as well as Magruder's original compositions. The Monktet has played in leading Southern California jazz clubs including the Jazz Bakery and Spazio, along with performances and clinics for universities and music programs.

A Day in LA: Washington Boulevard Art Concert

WHERE: The entire length of Washington Blvd., from Whittier to Venice Beach

“A Day in L.A.” shows work from over sixty Los Angeles artists and non-artists in unused public outdoor spaces along the entire length of Washington Boulevard’s 27 miles, from Whittier to Venice Beach. For one day artists will perform works, create installations, facilitate happenings, and make music in unexpected spaces, such as on the sidewalk, between dumpsters, along railroad tracks, as well as inside the audience’s cars as they traverse one of LA’s most iconic boulevards. An official map of the day’s events along with schedules and other downloadable information will be available to the public starting on October 4 on the event website (www.washblvd.tk).
 

Thom Yorke at the Orpheum Theatre

I was lucky enough to score a pair of tickets for each night of Thom Yorke's unnamed band's surprise shows at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. It was an incredible experience to see Thom perform with Flea et al in such an intimate setting. The theater was incredibly cool about letting people document the sold out performances and the overall vibe was one of intense excitement --  I think everyone present felt lucky to be there. Trendsettaz presents the premiere of Film Night at White Rabbit with a screening of “Vast Wasteland: A Hollywood 187 Film” and a performance by director Derrick B. Harden aka Couture Ink and “Not Waving but Drowning,” directed by Countess Alex Zapak.  In “Vast Wasteland: A Hollywood 187 Film,” the director draws from his roots in urban culture and the art world to create this groundbreaking short film.  The film was inspired by “Hollywood Murder” the album.  The film is Executive Produced by Oli “Power” Grant and Michael Lyons Wier and features Olga Nemcova and Alexi Tavel.  “Not Waving but Drowning” is a companion piece to Countess Alex Zapak’s musical, “There’s A Lot of Hate in Your Love” which will premiere during London Fashion Week.

"L.A. Jazz Treasure Award" - Snooky Young

LACMA and the Los Angeles Jazz Society proudly present the inaugural L.A. Jazz Treasure Award to jazz trumpet legend Snooky Young. The evening features a special tribute band comprised of Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and Tonight Show band members. Mr. Young recently turned ninety and is a recent NEA Jazz Master awardee. Young was lead trumpeter of the Jimmie Lunceford band from 1939 to 1942 and has played with Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band. His longest engagement was with the Tonight Show Band from 1967 through 1992. Young is still playing and recording with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.

Elle Decor profiled musician John Mayer's Manhattan home. And it's a yawn. Following is their description of what you see above:

In the living area, the sofa, armchairs, lamps, cocktail table, and handknotted silk rug are all by Armani/Casa; the stool, made of woven water hyacinth, is from Apartment 48, and the velvet pillows are from ABC Carpet & Home.

OMFG... how boring! How can a young guy like John have the taste of a 72 year old Japanese woman? I'm not saying his home is ugly. It just doesn't fly for a young rock star's apartment. Someone's been living in hotel rooms for too long (this is a favored aesthetic of the MTV Cribs set). Nice guitar but it's hard to believe it rests there all the time. Really?!

Am I the only person who caught the solo interesting piece in the room?! Hello, editors! Thanks for the obvious shout out to Andy Warhol in the bedroom, but like, there's a kick ass Ryan McGinness piece hanging on the wall and it's getting no love from you decorator zombies. John, whomever picked up that piece for you should've decorated the rest of your home.

SB - American Red Cross Event (08.06.09)

DWR Santa Barbara invites you to enjoy an in-studio benefit for the American Red Cross and local fire victims. Patrik “Piano” Maiani (www.ezitunes.com) will conduct a concert spanning from Bach to rock, played on a portable baby grand piano designed and built to his specifications.
