Quantum Reality (01/08/05 - 01/30/05)
Low Gallery announces a solo exhibition titled "Quantum Reality" by San Francisco based artist, Mars-1 which opens on Saturday, January 8, 2005 (6-10pm) and runs till January 30.
Over the last 5 months, Mars has created a new body of work featuring distant subconscious universes. Using wood, paper, ink, water colors, pencil, oils, these mixed media works dive deep into a world that only Mars can envision.
For years Mars has been creating mainly character driven pieces. "This new body of work illustrates where these characters might come from", says Mars. "After I finish this body of work, it'll make more sense to me… being able to see it from outside my own head". Through the idea Quantum Universe, there is no start or end to it. Once the universe dies, it is reborn again on imaginary time. Mars's created reality could potentially exist. "The title of the show helps the viewer open up to the possibility of it being an actual place", he says… "Very psychedelic but also based on the scientific possibility of its existence. It adds another element to the universe within."
Mars mixes elements of graffiti art, American Indian culture, Japanese animation, even the drawings of comic book legend Moebius in his work. "I like (combining) different ideas," he says. "I have a deep interest in space and the possibility of extraterrestrials. It opens my mind to different, deeper possibilities of existence. That plays a real big role in my art. We have the ability to bring our imagination into existence. That's how I view my (artwork). All of this stuff comes out the creative end and reforms into something new, but you still see remnants of (the inspiration)."
Mars has exhibited work across the United States with shows in Detroit, New York, Toronto, Portland, and Los Angeles. He created his own toy figure for Strange Co… Along side other artists, Damon Soule, David Lee, and Nome, Mars is featured in the book "4 Words". He has been interviewed and featured in Juxtapoz, Staf, Mass Appeal and many other magazines and web sites. He lives and works out of San Francisco.
"The evaluation of our perception of mathematical reality causes a new sense to develop, which gives us access to a reality that is neither visual nor auditory, but something else altogether"

FAFI on the subject of MADEMOISELLE PRETTY DEPRESSING
"It's a story of a girl, a Fafinette of course...She is first into sexy stuff and hitting on guys, but then when she realises that she is someone else, maybe someone more interesting and mysterious, she wants to travel, travel into time and in her mind. She gets to know new horizons and new characters. (introducing) Hmilo, her friend. He's a cute monster, he's got hairbrushes instead of teeth and he can brush her hair because she loves it."

BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE (11/06/04)

CURATED BY MAYA HAYUK
BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE is a print show comprised mostly of east coast printmakers working on paper, t-shirts, handmade books, zines and 45 record covers. many of the artists are involved and collaborate with the following collectives and programs:
a better tomorrow
barnstormers
cannonball press
downtown for democracy
K48
space 1026
violence grows
PART OF THE PROCEEDS FROM THIS SHOW WILL BE DONATED TO DOWNTOWN FOR DEMOCRACY AND STUDENTS FOR A FREE TIBET
CURATORIAL STATEMENT
most of the work in BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE has been made during the last few months of rising tensions of an unjust war, alienation most generations suffer from our nation's ethical, moral and political polarity, a collective fear of our world's fate and a general distrust of the electoral process. although much of the work doesn't necessarily comment on these issues directly, they do have one thing in common: democracy. printmaking, making multiples, producing art that can get into the hands of the people with the grace and enlightenment that the first printing press achieved is a testimony to possibly
the most democratic and sovereign form of art.

Dave Delaney - Grain: Paintings on Wood (10/01/04 - 11/26/04)
DAVE DELANEY
GRAIN
Paintings on Wood
October 1 - November 26 2004
Opening Reception: Friday, October 1 - 6-10pm
Second Reception: Friday, November 5 - 6-9pm
222gallery
222 Vine Street
Philadelphia, PA 19106
222gallery is proud to present Philadelphia based artist Dave Delaney in his debut solo exhibition: Grain. Consisting of oil paintings on plywood, Delaney's work reveals another facet of the photo realist genre. In this exhibition, Delaney continues to study the people and objects that surround him.
Like many of his predecessors, Dave Delaney's paintings walk a fine line between true reality and abstraction. While other realist artists such as Gerhard Richter and Don Eddy have used depth of field or absolute focus, respectively; as recurring structure for their imagery, Delaney uses the undulating wood grain of plywood as an abstract background for his closely studied subjects. Carefully paired with, and oriented to the subject, the organic pattern of the wood can suggest horizon, movement, and emotional tone. Equally, this open milieu stands in direct contrast to the detailed subject before it, soliciting a closer look into the subject of the painting. It is this careful inspection that reveals the subtlety of emotion, and perhaps a better understanding of Delaney's careful choice of subject.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Grain, as a body of work, is a move forward in my painting. My work has always been very subject oriented, painted exclusively on wood. I paint things and people that influence me on a daily basis.
As an artist, I tend to feel that my work needs to change with each milestone, but at the same time, I feel the need to stick with what works, what feels comfortable; as a result, I have found ways to subtly explore within the process that already exists.
Grain is the most recent incarnation of this exploration; color has been explored, as well as a subtle narration at times with my figures and objects, while maintaining the simple portraiture I strive for. I have always had a reason or meaning for choosing any one person or pose, usually based upon the subtleties of that persons personality or actions; or the manner in which and object interacts with my life, and I have tried to push that with this body of work, maybe imperceptibly to the viewer, maybe not.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
David Delaney is a 28 year old Painter, Designer and Illustrator. Dave grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs surrounded by a strong art influence, both from family and friends. Dave started drawing at an early age under the training of his grandfather, who was also a painter. During high school Dave took as many art classes as possible and continued his studies at University of the Arts in Philadelphia, graduating in 1998 with BFA in Illustration. During his tenure at U of A, Dave became friends with a group of artists who now show as a collective under the name 1208. Delaney also works as a Designer and Web-Developer for odg / otto design group.
Delaney was recently named one of twenty-five emerging designers in 2004 by STEP Magazine. Dave Delaney currently lives and works in Philadelphia.

ambriel floyd: wallflower and other visions (10/08/04 - 11/05/04)

four x four gallery presents:
AMBRIEL FLOYD
wallflower and other visions
October 8 - November 5, 2004
Opening Reception:
Friday, October 8, 2004, 6-10 p.m.
four x four
7922 W. 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90048
Bridging the gap between art and fashion, artist/designer Ambriel Floyd has made a name for herself by using original artwork to create textile designs for her own line of accessories and ready-to-wear. Each piece she creates has a hand-worked quality created by printing, hand stitching, or hand beading. Clients include Four x Four LA, Barneys, Seven New York, United Arrows Japan, Changes Japan, And Shine Hong Kong.
Her work has been featured in Inside Design Now (The Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial book), V Magazine, Blackbook, i-D, Time Out New York, Dazed and Confused Japan, Elle Japan, Home Japan, Spur Japan, Madame Figaro Korea, Squint Germany, The Today Show, MTV Music Awards, and Daily Candy, to name a few. She was a finalist in the GenArt Styles Design Competition in 2003.
Past collaborations have included work with designer Tess Giberson and work with artist Kenzo Minami. For the current show, she is working with Swarovski Crystals, Miss Sixty, and Standard Screen Supply to explore a body of work ranging from purely visual art to fashion within the context of art.
Ambriel is from South Carolina but lives and works in New York.
AMBRIEL FLOYD on the subject of WALLFLOWER AND OTHER VISIONS
I've always been a big believer in the process of revision.
My finished pieces generally start out as complicated sketches that are then reduced to a more abstract and pure form, thus creating a lexicon of symbols and images that work together in code to tell a story. The works for this show are based on particular settings, from childhood memories of my grandparents' garden to more recent experiences in urban and rural environments. For each setting I use a vocabulary of essential shapes and lines to illustrate the world as I see it. Like a puzzle, each element has its own place in the original artwork. Each element can also be repurposed to create a patterned textile design. And each textile design can then be used as inspiration for a more sculptural incarnation, that of an accessory or piece of clothing. This project is meant to illustrate the process from idea to art to utility to fashion, using screen printing as the uniting medium.

KEVIN LYONS - IT'S ONLY BUSINESS: Words That Define Me (09/03/04 - 10/02/04)

Curated by Christopher Bettig
"Beauty, no doubt, does not make revolutions. But a day will come when revolutions will have a need for beauty." - Albert Camus, The Rebel
Four x four Gallery presents new works from east coast typographer, artist, and father, Kevin Lyons / a.k.a. Natural born in the exhibition, IT'S ONLY BUSINESS: Words That Define Me. Lyons graphically explores the semiotics of old school hip-hop through a series of typographically-driven installation pieces that illustrate and capture the colorful and dynamic wordplay that characterized his early influential years. The show reflects growing up surrounded by words and beats and the struggle to find a typographic equivalent. By displaying these combinations, he attempts to expose the process and methodology by which he developed his own style and humor and the conceptual basis behind the quirkiness and non-linear quality of his personal work. Tired of trying to convince the world that there could be a graphic equivalent to rap music, Lyons has resigned himself to taking all the qualities of hip-hop and using them as a platform to design and work from.
Again choosing to explode his patented daily hand-drawn to scanner to computer to printer techniques (known only in the business as "the skillz"), he elevates his methodology by increasing scale and size and subject upon a larger surface. Lyons recombines some of the very lyrics that helped lead him to a lifelong love for envisioning and pysically representing the spoken word. The show is to be read from top to bottom. Lyons states "Often I find myself overdoing something in order to to feel that it is better than something else. Overcompensating. Using sheer, overwhelming quanity of work to overcome any insecurity regarding the quality of the work itself. I often fight this urge. However, here in IT'S ONLY BUSINESS I fully embrace this idea and overcompenate to the nth degree."
The show is dense in linework and pays formal homeage to a few of his favorites including echoes of Cy Twombly and Kieth Haring and includes a personal challenge to legendary designer / art director Herb Lubalin. But it is the subject matter itself which takes center stage here. Lyons borrows and then recreates a master poem to himself - a list of toasting and boasting, flipping verbs, and shifting sentences. Fragments of his most formidable years.
Background:
After receiving his masters degree from CalArts in 1998, Kevin Lyons has worked for Nike, both in and out of house, has been Art Director of Urban Outfitters on two separate occasions and has been Art Director at filmmaker Spike Jonze's Girl Skateboard Company. He was also the original US Art Director for TOKION Magazine. He continues to maintain long-standing freelance relation-ships with Nike, Jordan Brand, Adidas, Stussy and Stussy Japan, Neroli Records, UBIQ, HUF, Redfive, Commonwealth Stacks, Sandinista, and longtime friend and collaborator NYC artist, SSUR.
A typographer, an art director, a designer, a teacher, and a father, in 2001, he was named as one of the "top forty designers under thirty" by ID Magazine. His work has been published worldwide from Thrasher to The Face to Relax to Lodown to Anthem and Refill, as well as shown worldwide including solo shows in Philadelphia, SF and Tokyo. He has also written articles for the AIGA Journal, as well as adressing the AIGA on two occasions including as a published recipient of its Fresh Dialogues Series. He also taught typography for two years at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Most recently Lyons was the Design Director at Stussy. This year saw the release of his own line of toys (UPROCK ANIMALS) through Sony Creative in Japan. He also produces two clothing lines; one for 2K called Atlantis, and the under under his personal namesake, NATURAL BORN. Both are distributed globally. Currently, Lyons maintains his own small experimental graphic project also under the namesake, Natural Born from Philadelphia where he lives and works with his wife and daughter drawing type and bumping Twin Hype.

KOSTAS SEREMETIS / Now and Neve® (07/30/04 - 08/28/04)
KOSTAS SEREMETIS
Now and Neve®
July 30 - August 28, 2004
Opening Reception: Friday, July 30, 2004, 6-10 p.m.
7922 W. 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90048
four x four gallery and Otto Design Group continues its focus on the real-life art forms of design and urban culture with the solo exhibition NOW & NEVE® featuring new paintings by artist Kostas Seremetis.
BACKGROUND
Kostas Seremetis was born in 1972. He started his career painting walls in Boston night clubs after high school, and by the age of 19, had his first exhibition. Since then, Kostas has developed an international underground following.
He has exhibited work all over the world: at the Parco Museum in Tokyo, Deitch Projects in New York, Made Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver, Colette in Paris and the Hyteck Convention Center in Hong Kong, to name a few. His work is sought out by private and corporate collections such as Nike and Berlin Movement.
In addition to painting, Kostas creates abstract short films. His films have been exhibited in the Laforett Museum in Tokyo and The Bonn International film festival in Berlin.
He has also collaborated on projects with bands, including The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, 20 Miles, DJ IZU and The Cult, and in the commercial world with corporations like Levis, Puma, Medicom Toys and NGAP.
Kostas's work has been featured in a number of magazines, including Tokion, Rolling Stone, Relax, Spectacle, Dazed and Confused and XLR8R. In 2002, he published his first book, Superhero & Six, and is currently working on a second, called The Seven Devils.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
NOW & NEVE® I once heard a story about a shaman, who went to the forest to die and to return to life enlightened. The forest is where he would find his power, strength and wisdom. The studio is my forest, my temple, my church - it's where I create and recreate. I've gone beyond Lex Luther and the Man of Steel, and entered a new stage in my life, with new vision and a wider spectrum, no longer limiting myself to proven formulas and hipster references. Now I am battling with contrasts and the unexpected: bullets & brushstrokes, abstract & structure, spartans & nomads, life & death, anarchy & peace, black & white, lovers & haters, reality & myths, coffee & cigarettes, science & fiction, NOW & NEVE®.
Kostas Seremetis lives in Brooklyn, New York, where he maintains a private studio and works as a full-time artist.

Daydream Nation @ X-Girl (07/01/04 - 08/31/04)
"Daydream Nation" by Molly Dilworth
Is your Fed-ex delivery guy dreaming of a Miami vacation? Does a haz-mat trailer secretly desire to be a girly 3-wheeled Mickey mobile for a kid? And maybe an eight year old fantasizes about the speed of an 18-wheeler. Maybe the blank blonde youth is absorbed in her imaginary alternate life as an elegant church lady. These are just a few of the possibilities suggested by the iconic portraits in the ongoing series Daydream Nation.
Molly Dilworth is a painter and designer who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She believes in the power of visual language to communicate subtle and complex ideas. Her work addresses the seductive impossibility of utopia, nostalgia for future worlds which never manifest, and a fascination with advertising, pop culture and shopping.

Fuse Gallery Presents:
"Beautiful Mutants"
The Art of Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO
July 24 - September 4, 2004
Please join us for a Special Opening Reception: Sat., July 24, 7-10pm!
Fuse Gallery invites you to join us for a special opening reception for our next exhibition featuring the art of Mark Mothersbaugh, artist and musical mastermind of DEVO! This event will take place on Saturday, July 24 from 7-10pm. DEVO will be performing on July 23rd in Central Park and its very likely that Mark and DEVO will be attending the Fuse Reception. Complimentary beverages will be available. To view the art of Mark Mothersbaugh, please visit www.mutato.com. Mark is available for interviews, please contact Michael Pilmer at mpilmer@earthlink.net.
Mark Mothersbaugh, The Music:
Most of Mark's life has been dedicated to his most prolific musical endeavor, DEVO - a college art project that blossomed into a long career for the Akron quintet. DEVO is widely known and respected as one of the most important bands to emerge from the 70's & 80's. Mark still creates music on a daily basis at Mutato Muzika, his LA based company which is responsible for a plethora of current television, movie and commercial scoring. Mutato's recent projects include the movies The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, and Rugrats The Movie. Recent scores for TV include The Mind of the Married Man, Rugrats, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and ads for Target and Swiffer.
Mark Mothersbaugh, The Music:
Mark's love of art started in his early childhood just after it was discovered that he was extremely nearsighted and legally blind. His first correctional glasses offered Mark a new view of the world, inspiring his obsession with imagery and illustrations. His first works, which he began creating in the late 60' and early 70's, consisted of many different mediums, including rubber stamp designs, ink illustrations, screen printing decals, and mail art. He participated in local showings and received recognition for his work in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.
During his downtime on worldwide tours with DEVO, he began creating postcard art to send to his friends, which he has been creating every day since then - for 30+ years - a very obsessive habit. These cards originally served as his personal diaries, and were never intended for public viewing. That all changed when Mark decided to share his postcard works in his critically acclaimed worldwide solo shows during the 80's and 90's, and with his worldwide HOMEFRONT INVASION gallery tour in 2003.
Now Mark has embarked on his BEAUTIFUL MUTANTS tour in 2004, which showcases his photographic symmetrical creations and "corrected" imagery. See you there...

June 25th - July 18th, 2004
Opening Reception: Friday, June 25, 2004, 6-10PM.
7922 W. 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90048
four x four gallery and Otto Design Group continues its focus on the real-life art forms of design and urban culture with the June 25th installation by the multi-media design team of Todd St. John and Gary Benzel, known for their Green Lady series of street wear and graphics and their HunterGatherer design entity, based in Brooklyn. St. John & Benzel create installations, graphics, products, and motion design as means of both personal expression and wry cultural commentary. The new work focuses on basic forms, and brings more of their current idea
set into a 3 dimensional realm primarily via cut wood pieces. The show includes cut wood objects, silkscreen prints and wood form installations. "Mind Thoughts" will run June 25 through July 18, with an opening reception on Friday June 25th from 6-10pm.
BACKGROUND
In addition to their collaborative efforts, which began in 1993 when they were still attending the University of Arizona, both St. John and Benzel are active as independent designers. St. John has worked as an art director/designer in film, television, environmental, and print media; as an art director at MTV he was responsible for numerous print and on-air projects, including the graphics for the '98 and '99 Sports and Music Festivals as well as the summer 1999 channel redesign. St. John has also taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York and has been a guest graduate critic at Yale. Benzel currently lives in San Diego, CA, where he has run his own design office since 1996. Beginning as a graphic designer for magazines, Benzel's scope soon broadened to include art direction and design for footwear, apparel, and music clients. Together, St. John and Benzel have designed for MTV, Sony, Adidas, Raygun Magazine, Interscope Records, The Getty, Giant Robot Magazine, Airwalk, Knopf, Mammoth Records, Chronicle Books, and Little/Brown. They are the subject of the book by the AIGA/NY and the Princeton Architectural Press as part of their "Fresh Dialogue" series, which documents an annual program of discussions among young and influential figures of the design world. In recent years, St. John and Benzel have been participating in an increasing number of gallery shows as well, including Houston, alife / arkitip, RedFive, Studio NumberOne, and 222 gallery.

six ways out (06/18/04 - 07/17/04)
Brooklyn Fire Proof presents Six Ways Out, new work by six emerging artists working to explode the conventions of their media, movements, and moment.
The wooden sculptures, wheatpaste posters, oil paintings, installations, paper cutouts and graffiti of Todd St. John, Eric Elms, Patrick Rocha, Maya Hayuk, Craig Metzger, and Neck Face couldn't look more dis-similar, but they are champions of their respective crafts. Each challenges the classes of art that separate low from high, street from gallery, underground from mainstream, and popular from fine.
The current vanguard of art looks more disparate than alike, more fragmentary than coherent. And yet, the idea of art-making has never been stronger. Creative energy flows in every direction.
Please join us June 18th as the newly-renovated Brooklyn Fire Proof brings together these six artists, six models for art-making. With more than fifty new pieces and an enormous collaborative mural, Six Ways Out aims to show these works as myriad projections from the shared prism that ties the new art together.
Opening June 18, 8-11pm. Gallery hours Friday and Saturday 1-6pm through July 17.

The Lab 101 Space, in conjunction with Royal Elastics, presents Streetwise 3. Streetwise 3 is the third event organized by Freddi C, in an ongoing series dedicated to showcasing the works of Urban Influenced artists in a gallery environment.
The ROYAL ELASTICS STREETWISE concept began two years ago when its inaugural exhibition took place at a gallery on London's Portobello road - featuring 28 of the most cutting-edge, established; artists, commercial designers, illustrators and anonymous makers of streetwise scenes. Following the success of RE SW1, the bar was set to create a unique, but equally memorable, event experience for STREETWISE 2 the following year. For RE SW 2, nine internationally recognized Œurban artists¹ came together for a week to paint large murals in a historic gallery in the heart of Berlin. As they painted live, the public and press could watch their work develop. This encouraged an open platform for the artists and the onlookers to open a dialogue about this rapidly growing art movement.
This year ROYAL ELASTICS STREETWISE 3 - LA will feature five unique exhibitions. There will be 20 of the top American urban artists showcasing their art. Live DJs, and painting will accompany each exhibition. As the Urban Art movement is growing, RE SW3 continues to grow along with it. Each exhibition will be on display for one month. This will allow ample time for artists to develop ideas and expand creatively while reaching out to an ever-expanding audience.
The Lab 101 aims to showcase the urban art that has evolved from a form of inner city expression to a massive global art movement. Rooted in the creative voice of inner city youths, this art forum has grown exponentially. The style has begun to seep into advertising campaigns of corporations. Artists who started as preteen graffiti artists now command the direction and Œfeel¹ of multi-million dollar ad campaigns. Their creative sights have moved from the sides of subway cars, to the glossy pages of magazines and ad campaigns.
Artists who were the founders of this art forum have turned their talents into a viable living. Each decade, the visuals that defined the urban experience grow, develop and fracture. New forms such as wheat pasting, roller tags, acid etch tags, stencils, and outlaw sculptures continue to crop up.
Several RE SW3 artists use the same approach of wheat pasting their creations on the buildings and electrical boxes of the cityscape. For example, Becca and Kinsey have vastly different styles but both choose wheat pasting as a method of displaying posters throughout the public realm. This common method allows for the colorful, scratchy drawings of Becca¹s young girls to be at home on the streets next to the towering male figures that are depicted with razor sharp precision in Kinsey's work.
The graphic and bold figures within the works of Dalek, Rich Jacobs, Bigfoot, and WK Interact seem to loom out from the canvas with the presence of George Orwell¹s 1984 Big Brother. This central-figure approach hammers the character identity so successfully that the image becomes a brand as much as a work of art. It is this ingenious approach that merges style and image into a theme. In today¹s age of attention deficit disorder and the MTV 5-second sound byte, this style of art reflects the times and is successfully capturing the attention of humans immersed in a sensory overloaded society.
Today urban art has moved off the streets and sits at the doorstep of galleries worldwide. Together with Royal Elastics, The Lab 101 is opening its doors and welcoming the artists that have ushered in this stylistic art movement.

Artist Statement
"I am an artist from a family of musicians. My uncle plays and restores pianos and my brother travels the world playing tenor saxophone. As a kid I had no patience with piano lessons and learning to read music but absorbed everything I heard on the "Super Mix", a Saturday night radio program that was broadcast from the Fort Bragg military base near where I grew up. It was just far enough away that reception required one hand on the pause button and the other on an elaborate assembly of coat hangers, duct tape and tin foil jammed into the hole that was once an antenna on my boom box. I recorded the show every week with the volume low so not to disturb my mothers ultra sonic night hearing which would result in radio confiscation. Each week a new style of early New York hip hop found its way into the mind of a 12 year old boy living in the attic of a log cabin in rural North Carolina. By the time Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5 dropped "The Message" I was writing my own rhymes and banging out beats on the desks at school. Those beats have been in the back of my mind all my life."
-David Ellis

"ME, MYSELF & I" by Katrin Wiens (04/30/04 - 06/29/04)
X-girl presents Me, Myself & I, a quirky collection of textiles by New York City-based, German designer Katrin Wiens.
Katrin Wiens is a graphic designer and illustrator, and creator of Wiensworld, an inspired place of mind and design, colorfully rendered layer by layer. Wiensworld started with its first character Nyki, a peace icon introduced in 2002 with an array of products at Zakka New York. Now launching in Japan, the Spring/Summer 04 collection for Wiensworld is fluidly elegant, featuring a metallic accent closure on each garment.
Her witty and whimsical design work has appeared in numerous publications including WWD, Vogue (Japan) and Cutie (Japan), and in exhibitions in Tokyo and Berlin.
Me, Myself and I represents the softer side of evil, or perhaps the evil side of cuteness.
