yesterday i set the alarm for noon. it went off and i hit snooze three times. oh man, they're coming in half an hour. time to shower and prepare ree's birthday brunch. i quickly whipped out some silver dollar blueberry pancakes, eggs sunny side up, crispy bacon and some slow cooking grits. hani and ree took turns manually hand blending heavy cream into frothy fresh cream. sugary sweet california strawberries were sliced. hani brought delicious italian pastries for after breakfast desserts. silvio prepared the complimentary coffee. ree discovered the joy of confectioner's sugar. we ate heartily, bellies full, ending up on the area rug to watch some michel gondry videos. how does he do that? timing is everything.
martial arts was topical. we debated whether or not non-asian folk could ever look balletic performing martial arts in movies. yes, the matrix almost pulls it off. they do it well. but that's all wires. kill bill does not. uma's too tall to get her arms and legs to move around quick and graceful. look at lucy lui. so exquisite. asian. oh they're just actors. it's because they haven't been doing it for their whole lives! well neither has ziyi zhang and she's breathtaking in crouching tiger. no way. she's a martial artist. nope, classically trained dancer. she has control of her body therefore she can follow well choreographed routines and make herself look like she's been doing it as long as jackie chan. you don't even have to bring up kareem. what about chuck norris, a real martial artist? yeah, my point exactly. after our serious kung fu debate, jai and rohini set off for a birthday filled with museum visits and well wishes.
a few hours later, we prepared ourselves for loretta's birthday bash in the lower east side. having spent a couple of hours participating in a japanese interview, for quest magazine, we turned up a little later than expected. loretta's party had taken over the backside of the lolita bar. she looked radiant and brian her match, a dapper don. loretta and brian are classic beauties. models plucked from 50s pastel palm desert postcards. we caught up on all our past couple of week's events (brian got sick after gdc and loretta's been busy with the museum of television and radio) and then made plans for the future (kill bill part deux). i stuffed my face with the last chocolate cupcake. sweet.
