Bun Bo Hue, the noodle soup from the northern region of Viet Nam is a spicier cousin to pho, the noodle soup of the south. Although not as famous, I think it's far superior in taste!

Christina RAY invites you to damage DCKT Contemporary by proxy through her enactment of collected requests. Prior to the opening of the show, the DAMAGE interactive website (http://damageproject.christinaray.com) will allow visitors to mark a spot to be damaged on a virtual map of the gallery and to submit a message, poem, story or other text relating to the concept of damage. Based on the submissions, RAY will inflict physical damage points on the actual wall space which will generate the pattern for a large-scale wall drawing. RAY will execute the wall drawing April 1 – 7 and the gallery will be open to the public while she works.

You know growing up, I'd never find my name on knick-knacks. I always turned away from boardwalk gift shops empty-handed. You'd think that today, the internet would hook me up with some named-goods, but still...no such luck!

I often Google "Souris" looking for some county in Canada to sell wares for me to purchase and instead of finding, "I love Souris" t-shirts, I find images like this:

I think I might have to put this image on a mug or canvas bag. To all my Canadian neighbors, please support the female midget championships!

Morgan Lehman is pleased to present the work of Laura Ball and Andrew Schoultz in both artists’ first New York debut. Hailing from San Francisco, the artists create fantastical narratives with underlying elements of political awareness. The works on view confront issues including femininity, community, domination, and war. These topics are represented in each artist’s own artistic style: Laura Ball guides us through an exploration of her dream-like, beautifully crafted watercolors; and Andrew Schoultz expresses his ideals with his explosive, obsessive mark-making techniques.

Crab People.

The Vietnamese are crab people. We can't get enough of them. I grew up near the Chesapeake Bay and endulged in many crabfests growing up. I hold the family record for having eaten the most Maryland Blue Crabs in one sitting (20-something, my memory fails me now). So while in Florida, I begged my family to take me to an all-you-can-eat crab joint. It wasn't too hard twisting their arms. This simple fare is on my "last wish" death meal request list. For $30, I ate three heaping plates of Maryland Blue and Snow crabs. I chomped and picked and ate until I was content. I left the restaurant utterly grossed out and plenty happy.

The Japanese dish, Shabu Shabu or "Swish Swish" in English (the sound one makes from cooking raw beef in boiling water) ranks in my top 10 favorite dishes of all time. Contemporary hot pot spot, Mizu 212 Degrees is our local joint. The food is always very fresh and the staff is mad friendly. We dragged Jesus out to have dinner with us on this cold and rainy night. And it was perfect!

VertexList has the pleasure to present recent works by Lee Arnold and Mike Houston.

Mike Houston: "American Smells"

Mike Houston is a Brooklyn based artist, long-time instrumental member of the Barnstormers painting crew and co-founder of the legendary Cannonball Press.

Mike Houston's new collection of work, entitled American Smells, consists of new silkscreen and letterpress prints, paintings on the wall and vinyl floor tiles, directly and indirectly relating to the quirky specifics of consumerism, sloth, determination and collective thought that are part and parcel of the American Circus.

Drawing from television, advertisements, observation and the general American subconscious, Mike's work relies on a simple illustrative aesthetic whose influences are underground comics, populist printmaking, signage, and pure absurdist silliness.

At 33.75, my jumps are not as high as they used to be. It could've been the 23 pieces of dim sum I had just shoved down my throat. Or I could blame it on my adidas but my kicks have never done me wrong. Alas, at least I try to leave the earth every so often. This is your annual reminder to stop faking the funk and go have some fun.

NYC - Telepresence & Bio Art Book Launch (04/01/06)

Printed Matter, Inc. presents a book launch for Telepresence & Bio Art: Networking Humans, Rabbits, and Robots by the artist Eduardo Kac on Saturday, April 1, 2006 from 5-7 PM. This book presents a compendium of writings spanning 12 years by Kac that explore the multiple implications of his own art. Crisscrossing the boundaries of inventor/artist and questioning basic notions of creation, Kac writes to investigate internet art, robotics, and bio art. The author will be on hand to sign books as well as discuss his writings and projects. Printed Matter is located at 195 Tenth Avenue at 22nd Street.

Brooklyn - "Sticks" (04/01/06 - 04/30/06)

Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery is pleased to present the first New York solo show by San Francisco-based artist Samuel Lopes. The show, titled STICKS will include 20 acrylic paintings on wood hung in tight formation on the walls of the gallery.

The STICKS paintings represent an extensive body of work centered on scenes of communal living, self-sustainability, groupthink and stories of queer radical transformation. The characters Lopes employs shift from fox to boy to girl to cat to country house through their group activities far from the mainland of society. The isolation of this self-made family brings them together in ways that are as often entertaining as they are unsettling. The narrative that runs through the STICKS paintings frequently mirrors Lopes's own life story, at least in its attempt to articulate ambiguity, placelessness, and redefinition.
